NCHSAA and UnitedHealthcare sponsor “Championship Drive” food drive at football state championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) and UnitedHealthcare will bring a canned food drive to the 2016 NCHSAA Football State Championships Friday and Saturday, Dec. 16 and 17.

The campaign surrounding the championships, called #UHCChampionshipDrive, encourages fans attending the games to bring non-perishable food or household items to the entry gate of the Championships. All donations will be boxed by school affiliation.

After all collections have been made from the games at each venue, organizers will tally the number of boxes collected by each school. One high school at each of the three venues that collects the most will receive a $500 cash award donated by UnitedHealthcare.

The donated items collected at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem will be picked up for distribution within the community by Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC. All donated items collected from Kenan and Carter-Finley stadiums will be picked up for distribution by the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

“The NCHSAA is always looking for ways to help people in our state, and we know there is always a high demand at our state’s food banks over the holiday season,” NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker said. “We believe this is a great opportunity for our member schools and their fans to come together for a great cause in our state. We appreciate UnitedHealthcare’s support in helping people throughout North Carolina access fresh and nutritious food.”

“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with NCHSAA to bring the UnitedHealthcare Championship Drive Against Hunger food drive to life at this year’s championships,” said Garland Scott, CEO of UnitedHealthcare of North Carolina. “This food drive will ensure people in North Carolina don’t go hungry this holiday season, and support our local schools as well.”
