May 16, 1972 On this day in history in the NCHSAA, John Lucas of Durham’s Hillside High School won the North Carolina High School Athletic Association men’s singles tennis championship in Chapel Hill. He later went on to star in basketball at Maryland and had a very successful NBA career.
