2025 Softball Championship Series Game Notes
1A Championship Series
The West Regional Champion, the Union Academy Cardinals, will be making their second appearance in the NCHSAA 1A Championship Series. The Cardinals made their debut in 2023, when they swept North Duplin 13-3 and 7-4. This year, the Cardinals are 27-1 with a 10-0 record in the Yadkin Valley 1A/2A Conference. Union Academy defeated the defending champion East Wilkes in the West Regional Finals, avenging their fourth-round loss from 2024.
The East Regional Champion, the Perquimans Pirates, are making their third appearance in the final weekend but first in the current format. The Pirates went 0-2 in 1999 when the semifinals and finals were played as a double elimination tournament. Perquimans returned in 2000 and won the title, beating Cherryville 7-3 in the Championship Game. The Pirates also made two appearances in the Slow Pitch State Finals in 1996 and 1997, winning the championship in 1997. This year, the Pirates are 27-2 with a 10-0 record in the Four Rivers Conference. Both of the Pirates’ losses this year came to schools from Virginia, so they are undefeated against NCHSAA programs. Last season, the Pirates lost to eventual East Regional Champion Northside-Pinetown in the third round.
2A Championship Series
The North Lenoir Hawks, the Eastern Regional Champions, are 20-3 this season and finished second in the East Central 2A Conference with a record of 10-2. The Hawks are making their third appearance in the final weekend of the season, but the first in the current format. North Lenoir went 1-2 in the 2004 Championship weekend and again in 2005. North Lenoir ended last season in the first round of the playoffs, falling to Bartlett Yancey.
The West Wilkes Blackhawks, the Western Regional Champions, are making their second appearance in the State Championship Series, but first in the 2A Classification. West Wilkes won the 2013 1A Championship after losing the first game of the series 4-3 but winning game two (11-1) and three (4-1). The Blackhawks are 25-3 this season with a 13-0 record in the Foothills Conference. West Wilkes has been knocking on the door to the state finals for each of the last two seasons, as they lost in the Regional Finals in 2023 and the Regional Semifinals last season.
3A Championship Series
The Scotland Fighting Scots, the Eastern Regional Champions, enter the State Finals 29-1 and on a 28-game winning streak. The Scots won the Sandhills 3A/4A Conference with a record of 12-0. Scotland is making its first appearance in the softball state championships this weekend. The Scots did make an appearance in the Slow Pitch State Championships in 1991, losing the series 2-1 to Alexander Central. Scotland fell in the second round of the 2024 playoffs but reached the Regional Semifinals just two years ago.
The Rockingham County Cougars, the Western Regional Champions, are 26-1 this season with a 12-0 record in the Mid-State Conference. The Cougars are currently on a 25-game winning streak, dating back to a March 6 loss to McMichael. This is the Cougars’ first appearance in the State Championship Series. The Cougars lost in the third round of last year’s playoffs and the Regional Finals in 2023, losing two games to one to East Lincoln.
4A Championship Series
The D.H. Conley Vikings, the East Regional Champions, are 23-5 this season and 12-0 in the Big East Conference. The Vikings are making their sixth appearance in the final weekend of the season, having won four previous NCHSAA Fast Pitch Softball Championships: 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2022. Most recently, the Vikings beat East Forsyth two games to one in the 2022 4A Championship Series. Since then, the Vikings lost in the third round in 2023 and the second round last season. D.H. Conley made one appearance in the Slow Pitch Championships in 1991, losing to Fred T. Foard.
The South Caldwell Spartans, the West Regional Champions, are making their third appearance in the State Championship Series. The Spartans made their first appearance in 2018, losing to Jack Britt two games to one, but they returned in 2019 and edged Hoggard 2-1 in a series that needed extra innings twice. This season, the Spartans are 30-2 and went 8-2 in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference, losing only to Alexander Central. The Spartans fell in the fourth round last season and the third round in 2023.
