CHAPEL HILL— Lyrik Thorne from Ledford High School and Deon Daniels from Leesville Road High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards. Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Thorne, a senior from the Ledford women’s basketball team, averaged 42 points per game during the Central Carolina Conference Tournament including 52 points in the Conference Tournament Championship as the Panthers defeated the top seed, Salisbury. Thorn also scored 36 in a victory over North Davidson and 38 against Lexington. She averaged 82% from the foul line as well as eight rebounds and five assists per game during the stretch. She became the #17 NCHSAA all-time female scorer with 2,430 career points.
Daniels, a junior on the Pride men’s basketball team, recorded 32 points in the team’s conference semifinal game against top-seeded and previously unbeaten, Millbrook. Daniels followed up his semifinal performance with 16 points to help Leesville Road knock off Broughton and win the Cap-7 Conference Tournament.
Weekly recipients will be recognized on the NCHSAA Website and social media pages. They will also be honored at a banquet for all recipients from this year in April. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
