CHAPEL HILL— Mahogany Matthews from Hoke County High School and Javonte Williams from Wallace-Rose Hill High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards.
Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Matthews, a senior on the Lady Bucks basketball team, scored 29 points while grabbing 11 rebounds, three steals and four blocks against Lumberton. She followed that up with her sixth-consecutive double-double of the season and first triple-double of the year in a win over Seventy-First. She led the team with 17 points, 21 rebounds and 11 blocks. The 20-plus rebound performance was her third such performance of the year in rebounds.
Williams, a senior on the Bulldogs 2A State Champion football team, finished up a banner high school career, leading Wallace-Rose Hill to a fourth-straight state championship. He was named the MVP of the 2A Championship against Reidsville, piling up 207 yards on 22 carries, including a 73-yard score on the first play from scrimmage. With Williams leading the way, the Bulldogs have posted a 59-4 record over four seasons. He committed to UNC to play football on Sunday.
Weekly recipients will be recognized on the NCHSAA Website and social media pages. They will also be honored at a banquet for all recipients from this year in late April. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
