CHAPEL HILL— Mahogany Matthews of Hoke County High School and Marcus Harrison of Southern Vance High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards.
Each week, two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations submitted by media and school administrators.
Matthews, a senior on the Lady Bucks Women’s Basketball team, lead Hoke County to 3 conference wins last week. In the 52 – 44 win over Richmond, Matthews recorded a triple-double with 27 points, 19 rebounds and 13 blocks. The next night, Matthews scored 30 points, had 19 rebounds, 8 blocks and 7 steals in Hoke County’s 42-26 win over Purnell Sweet. She had 15 points, 9 rebounds and 7 blocks in the final win of the week over Jack Britt. Matthews surpassed the1,000 point career mark last week.
Harrison, a junior on the Southern Vance Men’s Basketball team helped the Raiders to three big Northern Carolina Conference wins. Harrison had 39 points and 8 rebounds in the 81-75 win over Lousiburg. The next night, Harrison led the Cougars with 31 points, including five 3-pointers in the 75-52 win over JF Webb. He had 31 points to end the week in the 78-70 win over Warren County.
Weekly recipients will be recognized on the NCHSAA Website and social media pages. They will also be honored at a banquet for all recipients from this year in late April. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
