CHAPEL HILL— Mara Hirtle from Pinecrest High School and Matthew Bennett from Monroe High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week award. Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from coaches, media, and school administrators.
Hirtle, a senior on the Pinecrest Golf Team recorded a career-low score on Monday, shooting a 6 under par 30 for 9 holes. Her performance included 2 eagles and 3 birdies as she led the Patriot Golf Team to victory in a conference match at Bayonet at Puppy Creek.
Bennett combined for 388 yards of total offense and 6 total touchdowns as Monroe defeated Cuthbertson 48-21. The senior quarterback completed 70% of his passes throwing for 3 touchdowns while adding another 3 touchdowns on the ground.
Weekly recipients will be recognized on the NCHSAA Website and social media pages. They will also be honored at a banquet for all recipients from this year in April. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
