CHAPEL HILL, NC – Mia Leonard from Uwharrie Charter Academy and Eric Hudson Jr., from West Mecklenburg High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards. Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Leonard, is a junior on the women’s basketball team at Uwharrie Charter. She had a record setting night in the Eagles 81-63 win over East Montgomery. Leonard posted a career high and school record 31 points, which included another school record of 8 made 3-pointers. She was 10 for 17 shooting on the night. To add onto her record setting night, Leonard posted 6 assists, 2 rebounds and a steal.
Hudson, a senior on the West Mecklenburg wrestling team won the 2018 Al Kessie Mecklenburg County Invitational Tournament at 195 lbs. He was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament. This was Hudson’s 4th consecutive win at the Invitational Tournament and he is one of very few student-athlete to win all four years of his high school career.
Weekly recipients will be recognized on the NCHSAA Website and social media pages. They will also be honored at a banquet for all recipients from this year in April. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
