LAST YEAR RECAPS
4A – Charlotte Catholic’s women’s team held together their string of 14 straight state championships, across three classifications of competition. Nora McCullagh was the Most Outstanding Swimmer in the meet, winning both the 50 free and 100 backstroke while swimming on two victorious relay teams.
South Mecklenburg held off Green Hope for the 4A men’s team title. Justin Ress of Cary was the Most Outstanding Swimmer, as the only double winner in the men’s competition.
3A – Chapel Hill’s men’s team took the 3A crown as they powered their way to a second straight state title, just a year removed from snapping Cardinal Gibbons string of six straight championships. Noah Cairns of Cardinal Gibbons picked up victories in the 100 breast, 500 free, and swam a leg of the Crusaders victorious 200 medley relay team on the way to being named Most Outstanding Swimmer in the men’s meet.
Marvin Ridge swam away with their second straight state championship. Caroline Hauder won two events, the 100 breaststroke and the 100 backstroke. She also anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay team as she was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer.
1A/2A – Raleigh Charter won their fifth straight women’s team championship, holding off Pine Lake Prep 284-222. Pine Lake Prep’s Alyssa Marsh was the Most Outstanding Swimmer for the second straight year. The double winner brought home the 50 free and 100 butterfly while swimming on relay teams that placed second and third.
Carrboro’s men needed to win the 400 freestyle relay and Shelby had to finish fifth for the meet to finish in a dead heat on the men’s side, and that is what happened. Carrboro and Shelby each scored 249 points to finish tied for first in the meet. Will Macmillan of Carrboro was a double winner, setting a 1A/2A record in the 200 free with a time of 1:38.85. He also won the 100 free and anchored a record-setting 200 medley relay team. He was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Swimmer for the second year in a row.
