CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association recognized the winners of several awards during the Association’s eight Regional Meetings held across the state over the past two weeks. The NCHSAA presented the Charlie Adams Distinguished Service Awards, Special Person Awards, Wells Fargo Conference Cups, and Ejection-Free Awards.
Region 1
Charlie Adams Distinguished Service Award
Wes Hughes, Athletic Director, Martin County High School
A longtime coach and administrator, Hughes has served Martin County student-athletes across numerous sports and helped guide the county’s athletic programs through two school mergers.
Special Person Award
J.J. McLamb, Executive Associate Athletic Director, East Carolina University
McLamb has spent more than two decades at East Carolina and has played an instrumental role in the University’s longtime partnership with the NCHSAA in hosting Eastern Regional Basketball Championships.

A longtime teacher, coach, and administrator at West Brunswick, Reeves has dedicated her career to supporting student-athletes while helping advance athletic administration locally and statewide.

Lewis Newman, Retired District Athletic Director, Orange County Schools
Newman brought a unique background in military service and medicine to a career in education that included leadership roles at Grimsley and Chapel Hill before concluding as district athletic director for Orange County Schools.
Dr. Josh Bloom, NCHSAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee
Bloom has served on the NCHSAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee for 21 years and has helped shape health and safety policies protecting student-athletes across North Carolina.

Buchholz has dedicated more than five decades to education and athletics in the Sandhills and has served as an NCHSAA Regional Director for more than 60 events and State Championship Director for more than 40 events.
