The NCHSAA provides scholarship support to deserving student-athletes across a wide variety of classifications and qualifications. This year’s awardees are:
CHARLIE ADAMS SCHOLARSHIP ($1500)
Angela Allen (North Lincoln) & Landon Hiatt (North Surry)
This year's female winner of the Charlie Adams Scholarship is Angela Allen from North Lincoln High School. Angela is a decorated runner, collecting multiple individual and state championships during her four-year career, including most recently at the 2020-21 NCHSAA 2A Cross Country Individual and State Championships. Outside of her athletic accomplishments, Angela served as the Science Olympiad President and was a member of the Beta Club and National Honors Society. She will attend Princeton University in the fall where she plans to major in Environmental Studies or Politics.
This year's male winner of the Charlie Adams Scholarship is Landon Hiatt from North Surry High School. Hiatt has been a member of the North Surry Wrestling team each of his four years, serving as team captain. Landon is an Eagle Scout and serves as the student body treasurer. In the offseason, Landon wrestles for a club team and helps teach younger wrestlers around him. He will attend NC State in the fall and is planning to major in Aerospace Engineering.
WILBURN CLARY MEDAL ($2000)
Charlotte Fullbright (Broughton) & Jamie Richard (Fred T. Foard)
This year’s female recipient of the Wilburn Clary Medal, Charlotte Fullbright, lettered in volleyball and basketball at Broughton High School. She was a member of Broughton’s student government and created and organized Maintain your Brain Battle of the Bands, raising awareness of neurological health issues. Fullbright was named captain of her volleyball team her senior year and brought home multiple scholar-athlete awards. Charlotte will attend NC State in the fall where she plans to major in neuroscience.
This year’s male recipient, Jamie Richard, is a two-sport athlete in wrestling and track and field at Fred T. Foard High School. He was a part of the NCHSAA 2A State Dual Championship team his junior year and was selected as the Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award recipient. Jaime is a member of the FCA and serves as the National Beta Club President. He will attend NC State in the fall with plans to major in aerospace engineering.
PAT GAINEY STUDENT AWARD ($5000)
Makenzie Lyall (Alleghany) & Dylan Potter (Pamlico)
This year's female winner of the Gainey Student Award is Makenzie Lyall, a softball and volleyball student-athlete at Alleghany High School. Lyall was a part of the NCHSAA 1A Softball State Championship team during her freshman year, taking home MVP honors in the process. Lyall will attend Appalachian State University in the fall where she plans to major in Physical Therapy.
This year's male recipient of the Gainey Student Award is Dylan Potter, a baseball student-athlete at Pamlico County High School. Potter lettered in baseball all four years at Pamlico, receiving All-Conference and All-Area recognitions. While at Pamlico, he served as Class President and was active in the Future Farmers of America. Dylan will attend NC State University where he plans to major in Mechanical Engineering.
WILLIE BRADSHAW MEMORIAL REGIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS ($750)
Katherine Nguyen (West Brunswick), Kahlia Hargett (Kinston), Justice Jason (Clayton), Lily Lin (East Bladen), Nyree Bell (E.E. WILLIE BRADSHAW MEMORIAL STATE SCHOLARSHIP (Additional $1000)
Lily Lin (East Bladen & Jack Thomas Spears (Hibriten)
The female recipient for the state level 2021 Willie Bradshaw Scholarship is Lily Lin from East Bladen High School. Lin is a two-sport athlete at East Bladen. Throughout her high school tenure she played varsity basketball and tennis serving as team captains of both programs while receiving all-conference recognition for tennis. Outside of athletics, Lily participated in several fundraisers and community service projects. In the fall she will attend NC State where she plans to major in Biomedical Engineering.
The male recipient for the state level 2021 Willie Bradshaw Scholarship is Jack Thomas Spears from Hibriten High School. "JT" participated in men’s tennis all four years and also ran cross country. Spears was named team MVP following his sophomore tennis season. Outside of athletics, JT is active in his community and plays the piano. JT will attend Mississippi College in the fall where he hopes to study Biomedical Science.
NCHSAA LACROSSE SCHOLARSHIP ($500)
Lily Barger (Weddington) & Jackson Hicks (Grimsley)
The female recipient and winner of the NCHSAA Lacrosse Scholarship is Lily Barger from Weddington High School. Lily lettered in lacrosse each of her 4 years at Weddington. Lilly was named Defender of the Year in 2019 and led the defense in ground balls, goals, assists and takeaways. She was also a member of the North Carolina National Team. Lilly will continue her lacrosse career at Liberty University where she will study government and politics.
The male recipient of the 2021 NCHSAA Lacrosse Scholarship is Jackson Hicks from Grimsley High School. Hicks was a member of the varsity lacrosse team for 3 years at Grimsley where he served as team captain his junior and senior seasons. Jackson hopes to give back to the game by helping local community lacrosse leagues grow interest in student-athletes prior to high school. Jackson will continue his lacrosse career at Brevard College where he plans to study environmental science.
TONY CULLEN SCHOLARSHIP ($1000)
Amelia Lester (Wake Forest) & Joseph Annetta (Holly Springs)
The female recipient and winner of the Tony Cullen Scholarship is Amelia Lester from Wake Forest High School. Amelia lettered in lacrosse each of her four years at Wake Forest, serving as team captain her senior year. Amelia will play lacrosse at Saint Leo University where she will major in biology. After college, she plans to give back to the game by becoming an official for girl’s lacrosse.
The male recipient of the 2021 Tony Cullen Memorial Scholarship is Joseph Annetta from Holly Springs High School. Annetta lettered in lacrosse all four years at Holly Springs, being named first-team all-conference his sophomore year. Annetta served as team captain and will continue his playing career at Loyola University, where he will major in mechanical engineering. He hopes to use his degree to design equipment to improve athlete safety.
