Jim Spivey Passed Away at 78

Jim Spivey, athletics director who spent the majority of his career at Reynolds High School, passed away on April 29, 2023.  Spivey, 78, died after complications of a stroke he suffered in March., 
Jim Spivey, an East Forsyth graduate, got into coaching and teaching soon after graduating from Appalachian State in 1967. Back then it was called Appalachian State Teachers College.
Spivey spent 45 years coaching and teaching in the Winston-Salem area. He started teaching and coaching at Southwest Junior High, then at the old Atkins High School for 11 years before moving to R.J. Reynolds in 1984 where he stayed until his retirement in 2012.  

Always a friend, Spivey played a role in the NCHSAA conducting several playoff events for several years in Forsyth County:  state wrestling and regional basketball championships at Lawrence Joel Coliseum and various state football championships at Wake Forest University’s Truist Field.

After Spivey retired in 2012, he was named to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 100 Administrators to Remember list as part of its centennial celebration.
Spivey is in the Reynolds High School Hall of Fame and the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Sports Hall of Fame.
