David Lash compiled a tremendous coaching record in both football and tennis during his career, which spanned from 1943 through 1975. Lash was born in Walnut Cove and attended Atkins High School in Winston-Salem before graduating from Shaw University in 1940.

One of the most famous high school basketball teams in North Carolina history did not actually win its state championship during the dream year, but Hillside High School in Durham established some amazing records. The 1965-66 season under head coach Carl Easterling promised to be great, since Hillside had won the North Carolina High School Athletic Conference state 4-A championship the year before with some explosive offensive fireworks. But nobody had ever seen what Hillside did with its “Pony Express” during the 1965-66 campaign, well before the advent of the three-point field goal.

Harvey Reid was one of the winningest basketball coaches in the nation and is still North Carolina’s all-time leader in that category, over 20 years after his untimely death. Coach Reid died on March 5, 1991, after collapsing during a tournament game. He compiled an incredible 816-208 record in 42 seasons as a head coach.
Last week, Enloe High School Tennis Coach, Steve Spivey, was recognized by Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) during the organization's annual awards at the International Tennis Symposium which was held on Hilton Head Island. Coach Barbara A. Foxx is a Lee County native, but she changed the lives of countless young women in Moore County. After graduating from Campbell University she began her career at Pinecrest High School in 1978, Foxx coached volleyball, basketball and softball, spending her entire 39-year career at the school. In years that saw many changes in women’s athletics, Foxx remained a constant, expecting her athletes to be prepared and in top physical condition. A skilled athlete herself -participating in karate and softball- she never believed that winning was the only thing that determined success. The values she taught and the respect she earned made an undeniable impression on the young women whose lives she touched.
