DURHAM— Tre Frederick, a recent graduate of West Johnston High School, has earned a prestigious honor for sportsmanship.
Frederick was recently named the winner of the Russell E. Blunt Sportsmanship Award by the Durham Sports Club.
The club honors one athlete from the region for exemplifying the character of Blunt. The award is in honor of the late long-time Durham Hillside coach who is a member of both the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame and the National High School Hall of Fame.
Frederick was the recipient of the Greater Neuse River Conference sportsmanship award the past two years, and he was also the 2014-15 North Carolina S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Student of the Year.
Jimmy Williams, the West Johnston football coach and athletic director, was quoted in the Raleigh News and Observers that in his 25-year coaching career Frederick was the best leader he had seen.
Frederick plans to continue both his education and his athletic career at Randolph-Macon College.
