West Forsyth, East Surry Win Baseball Openers

NCHSAA 4-A BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP–GAME ONE

 

WEST FORSYTH RALLIES TO BEAT RICHMOND 6-4 IN 4-A OPENER

            GREENSBORO—West Forsyth erupted for four runs in the fifth inning to rally to a 6-4 victory over Richmond Senior on Friday in the opening game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A baseball championship series at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

          Alex Vanderstok, West Forsyth’s leading hitter on the season, led the way for the Titans with three hits in four at bats and also drove home a run. Designated hitter Brett Saunders was two for four for the winners.

          Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Titans put together two singles, two walks, including a bases loaded walk to Nick Adams to force in a run, and then a throwing error on a hard-hit ground ball that allowed three runs to score.

        Bradley Brown, who entered the game hitting .371 for Richmond, had three singles and a double in four trips to the plate and drove home two runs for the Raiders.

      Michael Bates went the distance on the mound for West to get the win, striking out eight.  Nick Bullard got the loss.

        West Forsyth is now 28-5 on the year while Richmond slipped to 23-8-1.

     Game two of the best-of-three is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday. This is the 98th year for baseball championships in the NCHSAA.

NCHSAA 1-A BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP–GAME ONE

 

EAST SURRY RALLIES PAST WHITEVILLE IN NCHSAA 1-A BASEBALL

            GREENSBORO – Logan Sheets and Weston Payne each had run-scoring singles in a four-run sixth to help lead East Surry to a 7-4 win over Whiteville on Friday in the opening game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A baseball championship series at Five County Stadium.

            East Surry led 3-1 entering the sixth before Whiteville plated a pair to tie the game. But the Cards then exploded for four runs to take command and run their winning streak to 31.

            Cody Ashburn led the way for the Cards with a perfect three singles in three trips while Seth Brim and Scott Meredith had two hits apiece. East Surry is now 31-0, while Whiteville is 24-6 and had a 13-game win streak of its own snapped. 

            Tyler Marion got the win for East Surry, posting his 13th win against no losses. He struck out eight, walked three and scattered six hits in six innings of work. Zach Pait was the losing pitcher and also led the Wolfpack at the plate with two hits, including a home run.

            Game two of the best-of-three is set for Saturday morning at 11 o’clock. This is the 98th year for baseball championships in the NCHSAA. The Raleigh Sports Consortium and Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau serve as host city sponsors for the championship.
