Wells Fargo, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the standings for winter sports in the Wells Fargo Cup competitions for the 2012-13 academic year. 

The Wells Fargo Cup is sponsored by Wells Fargo and the NCHSAA. The award recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. The Cup program, formerly known as the Wachovia Cup, is in its 33rd year.

Defending champion Cary Green Hope sits atop the 4-A standings with Raleigh Broughton in second place, while defending Cup champion Cardinal Gibbons paces the 3-A group of schools.  Carrboro holds the top position among 2-A schools, with Lake Norman Charter and Hendersonville sitting one-two in the 1-A classification standings.

Green Hope, which added to its total primarily by winning the men’s swimming crown and finishing second in women’s swimming, increased its tally to 372.5 points and maintains an advantage of 75 points over Raleigh Broughton in the 4-A classification. Broughton was the state runner-up in men’s basketball and also placed in the top eight in women’s basketball while finishing seventh in men’s indoor track.

The next three in the standings are all located in Mecklenburg County. Charlotte Ardrey Kell is in third place with 257.5 points, followed by Charlotte Providence and Cornelius W.A. Hough tied for fourth with 247.5.

Cardinal Gibbons enjoyed another great season this winter, capturing the top spot in 3-A men’s swimming while placing fourth in women’s swimming and third among 3-A teams in women’s indoor track. The Crusaders brought their total points to 460. Marvin Ridge has 375 points for second place, with playoff points in four sports. The Marvin Ridge highlights include two state runner-up spots in women’s swimming and women’s indoor track. 

Charlotte Catholic is in third with 347.5 points, followed by Chapel Hill (285) and a tie for fifth between Weddington and Concord Jay Robinson at 197.5.  

Carrboro maintained its lead in the 2-A standings on the strength of a state championship sweep in both men’s and women’s swimming, giving the Jaguars a total of 387.5 points. Cuthbertson holds on to second with 312.5 points, with a pair of second-place finishes in both men’s basketball and women’s indoor track.

  Corinth-Holders vaulted from eighth in the fall to third with 272.5 points, followed by North Lincoln (270) and South Iredell (215).  

  In the 1-A classification, the top three teams remained the same from the fall standings, led by Lake Norman Charter with 360 points. Lake Norman Charter finished in the top eight in women’s basketball while taking second in men’s swimming and third in women’s swimming among 1-A participants. 

Hendersonville, winner of the most Cups overall with 13, is in second with 335 points. In winter sports, Bearcat team accomplishments included finishing in the top eight in men’s basketball while placing second among 1-A schools in men’s indoor track and in a tie for third in women’s indoor track.

Perennial power Kernersville Bishop McGuinness is in third with 300 points, winning its eighth straight women’s basketball championship and taking third among 1-A schools in men’s swimming. Raleigh Charter (217.5) is in fourth and Durham’s North Carolina School of Science and Math (215) is in fifth.

Wells Fargo Cup points are determined by a system based on performance in state championship events. All schools that finish in the top eight positions (plus ties) earn points. In the playoff events involving teams from more than one classification, Wells Fargo Cup points are awarded based on the school’s standing against other schools in its own classification. If fewer then eight schools from a classification compete in a sport, only those schools that are represented are eligible to receive the Wells Fargo Cup points. 

Points are awarded for all sports as follows: 50 for first, 45 for second, 40 for third, 35 for fourth, 30 for fifth, 25 for sixth, 20 for seventh and 15 for eighth. In the event of a tie, the schools receive an equal number of points based on the number of teams that tie and the number of teams that finish higher in the standings. Five points are awarded for each sanctioned sport in which a school competes. 

Wells Fargo Cup standings are announced three times each school year: once after the fall, again after the winter sports, and then concluding with the winner after the spring sports season ends in June. The engraved silver cups are presented during NCHSAA Day activities at UNC-Chapel Hill each fall.
