Each week two athletes in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association are selected for the Performance of the Week Award, Powered by OrthoCarolina. These athletes are nominated by coaches, media and school administrators for their outstanding performance.
The OrthoCarolina Performers of the Week for week 10 of NCHSAA competition are Madison Darnell from Highland Tech and Jorge Cruz-Celestino from Willow Spring.
Darnell, a sophomore tennis player for the Rams, won the 1A Singles Championship at the Women’s Tennis Individual Championships at Cary Tennis Park last week. In winning the title, she avenged a loss from the Regional Championship Round where she fell to Manya Nallagangu from NCSSM – Morganton.
Cruz-Celestino, a senior forward for the Storm, scored in the final seconds of his final home game to end his regular season career with a hat trick. The 6-1 win over Southeast Raleigh gave Willow Spring a 15-6-2 overall record and the Greater Neuse River 4A Conference Championship.
