Indiana, IN – Minimizing risk during high school sports and activities remains paramount to the NFHS. As such, the institution of the Pre-Event Medical Meeting (PEMM) is strongly encouraged at all events during the 2025-26 school year. Formerly referred to as the pregame Medical Time Out (MTO), the PEMM ensures that venue- and team-specific, written and rehearsed Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) are in the hands of all individuals onsite who may be responsible for implementing them. The intent and purpose of the Pre-Event Medical Meeting is to prepare school administrators, athletic trainers, coaches, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers, team physicians, game officials, and any other designated individuals to be aware, educated, and ready to respond. Communication and readiness among these groups can make the difference between a positive outcome and a negative experience if and when an injury or incident occurs.
All stakeholders are encouraged to complete the newly released “Emergency Action Planning for Afterschool Programs” course at the NFHS Learning Center. This course provides valuable insight into the specifics of both EAPs and PEMMs.
Regardless of the level of resources available from school to school or sport to sport, an emergency can occur anywhere, at any time, and to anyone. Proactive preparation and the implementation of measures that safeguard the health and well-being of student-athletes are essential. Every individual involved can make a difference.
