CHAPEL HILL— Karsyn Mundy of Bunker Hill High School and Jahmir Smith of Lee County High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Smith, a junior running back on the Yellow Jackets football team, piled up 302 yards on 39 carries including three touchdowns as Lee County knocked off Douglas Byrd 41-28. The Yellow Jackets are enjoying an unbeaten season so far at 7-0, 2-0 in Cape Fear Valley 3A Conference play. The team is scheduled to host Grays Creek this week.
Mundy, a senior for the Lady Bears volleyball team, broke the school record for kills in a match for the second week in a row. She put down 32 kills in a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over East Lincoln last week, a week after setting the mark with 29 kills against West Lincoln the previous week. Mundy had 59 kills in two conference matches last week including 27 in a win over Newton-Conover, with the senior hitter bringing the Bears back from an 0-2 deficit.
TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Sports Night show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
