SOUTH BRUNSWICK GOLFER HAS INDIVIDUAL LEAD, LEDFORD SEEKING THIRD STRAIGHT TEAM CROWN IN 3-A WOMEN’S GOLF

FOXFIRE VILLAGE— Ashley Sloup of South Brunswick had a four-over par 75 to lead the individual standings after Monday’s opening day of play in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 3-A women’s golf championships at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club.

Sloup holds a one-stroke advantage over Meghan Holbrooks of Ledford and Siranon Shoomee of Lee with 76, with Payton Culler of West Henderson in at 77.

The championship layout is a par 71 and 5,787 yards.

Ledford, seeking its third consecutive NCHSAA state team title, holds a six-shot advantage over Northern Guilford in the team standings. West Henderson is third at 259 and Fayetteville Terry Sanford is fourth at 267, 17 shots off the pace.

The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 11 teams and 78 golfers are competing in the event, the 11th year that the sport has been classified. It is the third time that three separate championships have been held and the 33rd year for state championship competition in the sport.

The final day of play is scheduled to get underway at 9:00 on Tuesday morning.
