SHELBY—Veteran coach James Smith has been named the new women’s head basketball coach at Shelby High School, according to a report in the Shelby Star.

     Smith comes to Shelby after serving as the head women’s coach at Hough for the past two seasons, where his teams compiled an overall mark of 37-16.  He has more than 15 years of coaching experience in three states.

     He has coached at Chester (SC), Washington (NC) and Farragut in Knoxville, Tennessee.  He also was an assistant coach at the college level for a year at Wingate University.

     Smith is a native of Washington, NC, and takes over at Shelby for Cal Pass.
