The recent sudden death of long time South Davidson High School coach Mike Crowell rocked that community, but South Davidson has felt an outpouring of concern and compassion from a number of places.
Not the least of them was Chatham Central High School, which played South Davidson in a game shortly after Coach Crowell’s death.
Both teams huddled together before the game and then entered the field linked arm in arm— both Chatham Central and South Davidson together–as they walked on between both cheerleading squads. The teams met together at the end of the contest at midfield.
Chatham Central received several letters from members of the South Davidson community thanking the football team and fans for their efforts. One letter said, in part, “Your team showed what high school athletics is SUPPOSED to be about. Please pass along to your coaches and players that the empathy and compassion they displayed did not go unnoticed.”
WFMY-TV, channel 2 in Greensboro, had a feature story about the game and the station has granted us permission to shown the video on our web site.
