SHELBY’S PARKER, HENDERSONVILLE’S FUQUA ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS
CARY— Marshall Parker of Shelby marched into the semifinals with a pair of easy wins on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men’s tennis championships at the Cary Tennis Center.
Parker, the 2013 2-A singles champ, won both of his matches in straight sets and lost only one game in the process. He’ll face last year’s singles runner-up, Jacob Fuqua of Hendersonville, in a Saturday morning semifinal. Fuqua dropped the first set in his quarterfinal but rallied to eliminate West Davidson’s Brett Moore.
Ryen Reid of Newton-Conover will play Joseph Schrader of Brevard in the other singles semifinal.
A pair of Carrboro doubles teams, including Max Fritsch and Jake Zinn along with Jason Wykoff and Sean Ross, won their matches to get to the semifinals. Fritsch and Zinn, the defending doubles champions in 2-A, did not lose a single game in Friday action, much less a set.
Fritsch and Zinn will play Brevard’s Andy McCall and Joe Roberts in the semifinals, while Wykoff and Ross will take on Daniel Lee and Guy Blanc of Durham’s North Carolina School of Science and Math in the other semi.
Semifinals are scheduled to start at 9 am Saturday morning, with the finals following later in the day.
