James “Rabbit” Fulghum, a member of the 2004 class of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, is remembered as one of the greatest baseball coaches in North Carolina history. His career included stops at North Edgecombe and Greene Central, where he won five state baseball championships (1980, 1982, 1987, 1990, and 2000) and finished with more than 600 high school victories. Fulghum also coached North Edgecombe to the 1963 state basketball title. A graduate of Rock Ridge High School and Barton College, he was also inducted into the Barton Hall of Fame and the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame.
