PINEHURST – Nine golfers are within five shots of the lead in the individual standings after Monday’s opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Pinehurst number six.

Megan Cullip of Charlotte Ardrey Kell and Emilia Migliaccio of Raleigh Athens Drive had the low rounds of the day with one-over par 73 to top the leader board.  They are two shots ahead of Moon Cheong of Ardrey Kell.

A trio of Wake County golfers had five-over scores of 77 to tie for fourth, including Green Hope’s Meghan Symonds, Kendra Dalton of Heritage and Savannah Gowarty of Raleigh Sanderson.

Par is set at 72 and the layout is 5,735 yards.

Defending champion Ardrey Kell leads the team standings with a 235, 10 shots ahead of second-place Cary Green Hope.  Wake Forest has a 252 while Holly Springs and Southern Pines Pinecrest are just behind at 253.

The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 10 teams and 78 golfers are competing in the event, the 11th year that the sport has been classified. It is the third time that three separate championships have been held and the 33rd year for state championship competition in the sport.

The final day of play is scheduled to get underway at nine o’clock on Tuesday morning.
