NEWTON-CONOVER TAKES DOUBLES FOR 3RD STRAIGHT YEAR;SALISBURY FRESHMAN WINS SINGLES TITLE
CARY— A Newton-Conover team captured the doubles title for the third year in a row in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men’s tennis championships on Saturday at the Cary Tennis Center.
The team of Ryan Lampe and John Tate defeated Wilkes Central’s Jesse Massucco and Evan Day 6-3, 6-1 in the championship match. The Red Devil team had ousted Alan Lebowitz and Abraham Post of Salisbury in a semifinal earlier on Saturday.
Lampe was a part of the 2011 state title duo as he paired with Hang Lak Choi, who was a member of both the ’10 and ’11 championship teams.
Freshman Michael Ogden of Salisbury downed South Iredell’s Patrick Hensley in the singles championship in impressive fashion, 6-4, 6-0. Hensley was the state runner-up in last year’s championships.
Ogden survived a tough three-set match in a morning semifinal, dropping the first set to Ray Webb Parker of Shelby but rallying to win 1-6, 6-1, 7-5.
