Longleaf Golf & Family Club, Southern Pines, NC (Par 72, 6602 yd., 72.1/131)

South Stanly holds a three-stroke advantage after the first round of play, narrowly holding off Christ the King and Mitchell which each shot a combined +52 to sit in a tie for second in the team standings. All four scoring players for South Stanly fired in the 80’s in the tournament’s opening round. Reid Smith, tied for ninth overall, led the way for the Bulls carding an 82 (+10) that included an 1-over 37 on the front nine including two birdies. Teammate Luke Dennis was right on his heels with an 11-over, 83 while teammates Dustin Hurley and Luke Webb posted matching 86’s. All four scoring members of the Bulls team are in the top 17 and ties after 18 holes.

Christ the King’s Colin Ferrick leads the tournament by one shot over Mitchell’s Connor Warren. Ferrick dumped in four birdies including three on the back nine to put up a 3-over, 75. Ferrick sunk birdie putts on back-to-back holes, both the par 4 12th and 13th holes, adding a third birdie to his card on the par 5 16th. Warren was steady for the Mountaineers, recording 14 pars for his round. He also birdied the 16th but did not fare well on the 12th and 13th, recording double-bogey 6 on each hole, finding himself trailing by one shot overnight.

2022 2A Men’s Golf First Round | East Surry & Midway share the overnight lead

Foxfire Resort | Red Fox Course (Par 72, 6756 yd., 73.5/135)

The quartets from East Surry and Midway went shot-for-shot in round one, both posting 40-over-par combined scores to sit atop the overnight leaderboard at Foxfire. Beddingfield’s Drew O’Neal is in the lead after the first day, thanks to a 1-under 35 on the back nine. He finished the round at 2-over, 74. Bradley Davis, Jr. led the way for the East Surry Cardinals, throwing up a 3-over, 75, as he sits in second place in the individual standings. Davis started rolling on the front nine with an eagle on the Par 5 4th Hole. He added three other birdies, all on the back nine, to counter a pair of double bogeys and finish the round in second. There are 15 players within five shots of the individual lead after the first round.

Midway’s Caden Hodges and Logan Atkins are hot on their heels, both carding 76 in the opening round. Hodges played well on both nines, posting matching 38’s for his two sides. Atkins struggled a bit on the front nine, carding a 42, but turned things around on the back nine with a pair of birdies and no bogeys to shoot 2-under, 34. The team competition is equally tight with the top eight teams all within 19 shots of one another heading into round two. West Davidson sits just eight shots back at 48-over while Polk County is in fourth at 53-over.

2022 3A Men’s Golf First Round | J.H. Rose out in front as Forestview’s Norman leads the way at 1-over

Pinehurst No. 6 (Par 72, 6637 yd., 72.6/134)

Nick Norman from Forestview has the overnight lead but has five players just one or two shots back of his 1-over 73 after the Opening Round in the 3A Championship. Norman managed pars on 17 of the 18 holes in his round, only blemished by a bogey on the par 4 8th Hole. Davis DeLille from High Point Central and Ryan Masterton from Central Cabarrus are just one shot off the pace, each posting 2-over, 74.

DeLille had to work a little harder than Norman for his 74, posting three birdies on the back nine to counteract two bogeys and a double. He also bogeyed the par 5 2nd Hole to start the front nine, otherwise coming through the front side unscathed. Masterton also posted three birdies in his round, all on the back nine, and got scratched up by five bogeys, including four on the front nine, to card his 74. In all there are 14 players within four shots of the lead after the opening 18.

J.H. Rose leads the team competition by six shots over Terry Sanford. The Rampants foursome was led by Luke Mosely who posted a 4-over, 76. Mosely was nearly a single shot off the lead, but triple bogeyed the par 4 18th Hole to finish in a tie for seventh with Western Alamance’s Brad Grajzar. Fellow Rampant Lake Williams sits just one shot back after a 5-over 77. Williams carded a single birdie for his round on the par 5 10th Hole.  Teammate Cameron Hardison chipped in a 7-over, 79, while Will Guidy added an 8-over, 80 for J.H. Rose to sit with a comfortable six-shot lead overnight.

2022 4A Men’s Golf First Round | Charlotte Catholic leads as Hartman & Weiler duel for individual title

Pinehurst No. 8 (Par 72, 6637 yd., 72.6/134)

Charlotte Catholic’s Will Hartman and Marvin Ridge’s Jack Weiler are deadlocked at even-par, 72, following the back and forth opening round, that saw the two trade the lead throughout the day. Hartman’s path to 72 was much more winding than Weiler’s, as Hartman started off with a birdie on the par 5 2nd before back-to-back bogeys on the 3rd and 4th Holes. He rallied at the run with birdies on the 11th and 15th Holes before finishing bogey, birdie, bogey on the 16th, 17th, and 18th Holes. Weiler struggled through the 5th and 6th Holes on the front nine, bogeying both holes before bouncing back on the back nine with three birdies, including two to close the round on the 17th and 18th Holes. There are six players within three shots of the overnight lead.

Charlotte Catholic leads the way in the team competition as the Cougars sit at 18-over par and 11 shots to the good in front of Green Hope and Pinecrest which are tied at 29-over par. Steven Shea has stayed right on the heels of Hartman for the Cougars, carding a 1-over, 73, that included an eagle on the par 5 17th Hole. Tyler Dorsey fired an 8-over, 80, and Clay Tardif posted a 9-over, 81 to round out the Cougars’ scoring lineup.
