Cantey, Timmins, Brundidge and Vernon Receive May Lowe’s Campus Captain Award

CHAPEL HILL, NC – Lowe’s Home Improvement, specifically the Lowe’s 4 Pros Division, in conjunction with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA), has selected Kim Cantey from Piedmont High School, the coaching duo of John Timmins and Jason Brundidge from West Johnston High School and Cameron Vernon from Northwood High School as the recipients of the Lowe’s Campus Captain award for May.

The Lowe’s Campus Captain program offers a platform through which school administrators, parents, students, and school community members can nominate deserving individuals for special recognition every month during the school year.

Individuals are nominated as a Lowe’s Campus Captain for helping play an integral role in building back sports during the COVID-19 pandemic.  In addition, these individuals are nominated for role models, making a difference in students' lives, exhibiting sound citizenship, excelling in academics/athletics (students), and/or positively impacting their peers. Each recipient receives a commemorative award and Lowe’s Home Improvement gift certificate.

Kim Cantey is the Athletic Director at Piedmont High School.  Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Cabtey has worked tirelessly to provide a safe environment for Piedmont’s student-athletes to compete.  She began the year by staffing the drive-thru screening process every morning to ensure student-athletes would safely attend summer workouts.  During the year, she put in numerous hours scheduling and rescheduling games.  Athletic Trainer Kaitlyn Miles said, “No matter what the situation, how short of notice when something comes up, Coach Cantey always finds a way to make the thing work, and she does it with a smile.  As she says, ‘It’s all about the kids.”

The coaching duo of John Timmins and Jason Brundidge from West Johnston High School used time during the COVID-19 pandemic to renovate the Wildcats soccer program.  They volunteered countless hours and their own money to create a new backstop fence, stadium chairs, soccer net supports, an outdoor CrossFit style weight room, repurposed old practice nets, and many other projects. These projects were completed to ensure student-athletes could continue to practice safely, adhering to all guidelines and remaining socially distant while still improving their skills. Nominator Jessica Jones said for the coaches, “Their time and effort has been incomparable to any devotion ever seen by a sports program at the high school level.” The improvement made during the COVID-19 pandemic will benefit many future student-athletes at West Johnston.

The final recipient of the May Lowe’s Campus Captain award is Cameron Vernon, Athletic Director at Northwood High School.  Coach Vernon has worked tirelessly to create the best possible athletic season safely for all Charger student-athletes.  He has allowed student-athletes to make the most of what has been a very challenging year.  Staying up to date on current policies and procedures and having consistent communication with coaches, student-athletes and parents have allowed for successful athletic seasons at Northwood.

"The North Carolina High School Athletic Association, in conjunction with Lowe’s Home Improvement and its 4 Pros Division, is very pleased and proud to honor Kim Cabtey, John Timmins, Jason Brundidge, and Cameron Vernon with the May Campus Captain awards,” said Que Tucker, Commissioner of the NCHSAA. “Each of these recipients exemplifies what it means to be a leader by demonstrating a willingness to impact the lives of their peers and their respective communities positively. It is this commitment and dedication that make each worthy of receiving the Lowe’s Campus Captain Award."
