George “Buck” Hardee

Buck Hardee compiled a tremendous record in baseball in Wilmington, both as the head coach at New Hanover High School and in American Legion competition. Hardee's teams won 13 conference championships and finished second in the state playoffs twice during his 35-year tenure as head coach. His high school coaching record was 396-133-1. In American Legion ball, his teams captured five states and one regional crown to go with 10 area championships. During Hardee's 27 years as coach of Wilmington Post 10, his teams posted 524 victories against 267 losses and a tie. He also was an assistant coach in football and served as athletic director at New Hanover. His teams were always known for their fundamental skills and good sportsmanship. Hardee grew up in Whiteville, attended Whiteville High School and graduated from East Carolina University in 1952. He also has had the unique perspective of serving as a coach and teacher and then serving on the local Board of Education. He was elected to the New Hanover Board in 1988 and served a four-year term.
