Billy Mitchell Mayhew

Bill Mayhew’s career as a teacher and coach encompassed 34 years, three at Troutman High and 31 at South Iredell. During that time, Mayhew built strong programs in both football and wrestling. He never had a losing season in 33 years as a wrestling coach and is North Carolina’s winningest coach ever in that sport with over 500 dual team victories. His team won the 1986 NCHSAA state wrestling championship as well as three Western North Carolina High School Activities Association crowns, and he was honored by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1997 as a charter recipient of the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award in North Carolina. He was a conference coach of the year 23 times and his football teams recorded 13 consecutive winning seasons. Mayhew is a 1963 graduate of Appalachian State University.
