CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) announced the selection of Andy Fowler from Raleigh for the Association's Bud Phillips Retiree Award presented on May 2, 2019 at the Annual Meeting in the Dean E. Smith Center. The award is designed to recognize individuals that have retired from full-time work in education and continue to be a valuable resource to the NCHSAA through various avenues of service.
Fowler, most recently the Women's Tennis Coach at Broughton, is more known for her coaching career at Sanderson from 1984 to 2009. She was an excellent coach in men’s and women’s tennis at Sanderson from 1984-2009. In 1984 she started her career in women’s tennis, adding men’s tennis in 1988. Under her leadership, the Sanderson women’s teams posted a dual meet record of 222-140 with the men posting 175-144. She coached Jon Goldberg and Phil Bye to the doubles state championship in 1991, with the team finishing runner-up in the duals. Her women’s teams won the Cap 9 championship in 1989.
In 2001, Fowler was named the NCHSAA’s Region 3 Female Coach of the Year. In 2005 she was selected as one of the Homer Thompson Eight Who Make A Difference Award Winners. In 2006 she received and NCHSAA Tribute of Appreciation. Fowler continues to serve the NCHSAA even in retirement, serving as the NCHSAA 4A Individual Tennis Tournament Director annually. She also is the Tournament Director for the Dual Team State Championship Matches annually, assuring a smooth and efficient event each year.
