CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has announced the winners of the Willie Bradshaw Memorial Endowed Scholarship for 2018-2019. The Willie Bradshaw Endowed Scholarship provides $750 of scholarship support to selected outstanding Black African American, Native American, Alaska Native, Asian American, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, or Hispanic American student-athletes participating on a sanctioned varsity team at an NCHSAA member school.
Out of the regional recipients, one male and one female student athlete will be selected as a state scholarship recipient and each will receive an additional $1,000 scholarship as state award winners. The state recipients will be announced at the Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 2, 2019 at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill.
ABOUT WILLIE BRADSHAW
The Willie Bradshaw Memorial Endowed Scholarship is in honor of Durham-native, Willie Bradshaw, an NCHSAA Hall of Fame inductee in 1995 and National High School Hall of Fame inductee in 2010. Bradshaw was an outstanding athlete at Hillside High School, playing on the undefeated 1943 football team that went untied and unscored upon. He went on to North Carolina College (now NC Central University) and then on to pitch professionally for several Negro League teams. He became the first African American city or county athletic director when he took over for the Durham City School system until his retirement in 1992.
About the Regional Winners
Danielle Brown – Bandys High School – Catawba, NC
Danielle Brown from Bandys High School has maintained a 3.6 unweighted GPA while participating on the Cheerleading team and in track and field. Brown is a member of the Beta Club and volunteered at soup kitchens, STEM camps, and cheerleading camps. She plans to study Biology as she furthers her education.
Esteban Cabascango – Cleveland High School – Clayton, NC
Esteban Cabascango is a member of the track and cross country teams at Cleveland High School. Cabascango was voted as Academic All-Conference all four years of his high school athletic career. Outside of athletics Esteban attended Governor’s School, is a member of the National Honor’s Society, served as manager of the school Radio Club, and founded the Video Production Club. He hopes to use this experience to study Graphic Design in college and has been accepted to UNC Charlotte, Appalachian State, and Mars Hill.
Sierra Davenport – Freedom High School – Morganton, NC
Sierra Davenport is a senior at Freedom High School. She has maintained a 3.8 unweighted GPA while playing basketball and volleyball. Davenport is a National Honor Society member and is interested in furthering her knowledge of rehabilitation services.
Rayford Gilbert – West Brunswick High School – Shallote, NC
Rayford Gilbert is a senior at West Brunswick High School where he ran track and played basketball. Outside of athletics, Gilbert was a member of the marching band and concert band, specifically in the drumline/percussion. He is active in his church youth group and sings in a Gospel trio consisting of himself and two brothers. Gilbert has been accepted to UNC Pembroke and wants to study Computer and Information Science.
Jeffrey Gunter – Ayden-Grifton High School – Ayden, NC
Jeffrey Gunter is a senior at Ayden-Grifton High School. Over the course of his high school career, Gunter participated in football, basketball, and track and field. He is interested in becoming a physical therapist or athletic trainer and will further his education at UNC Pembroke.
Tylah Harrison – Charles E. Jordan High School – Durham, NC
Tylah Harrison is a senior at Jordan High School where she has maintained a 4.0 unweighted GPA. Harrison is a team captain for the Varsity Softball Team. She is the Senior Class President, has completed Governor’s School and is a member of the National Honor Society. Harrison has been accepted to multiple Universities and will major in Pre-Medicine.
Eric Hudson – West Mecklenburg High School – Charlotte, NC
Eric Hudson is a senior student-athlete at West Mecklenburg High School, participating in football and wrestling. Hudson has had a distinguished wrestling career where he won the 4A 195 pound State Championship his junior year. He currently has a 3.5 unweighted GPA which ranks 9thin his class. Hudson wants to study Mechanical Engineering and has been accepted into Campbell University while waiting to hear from other colleges.
Gabriel Locklear – Red Springs High School – Red Springs, NC
Gabriel Locklear is a member of the baseball and football teams at Red Springs High School. He is also a four-year member of the Beta Club. Currently, Locklear is ranked 24th in his class and has been accepted into Virginia State University, while waiting to hear from other colleges. He plans on studying Computer Engineering as he continues his education.
Luis Martinez Sanchez – Princeton High School – Princeton, NC
Luis Martinez Sanchez is a senior at Princeton High School where he played soccer, ran cross country and was a member of the track and field team. Sanchez is an honor roll student who also is a member of the Beta Club. He has applied to several colleges and has been accepted thus far at the University of Mount Olive.
Kendall O’Neal – West Forsyth High School – Clemmons, NC
Kendall O’Neal, from West Forsyth High School, is a four-year member of the track team. She has participated twice in the NCHSAA Indoor State Championship Meet and has set team records in the 200m and 400m. She has been accepted to North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Central University where she will major in Early Childhood Education.
Micah Richardson – Central Cabarrus High School – Concord, NC
Micah Richardson, a senior at Central Cabarrus High School, has been a member of the Varsity Soccer team for 3 years. During his senior season, he helped lead his team to a share of the 3A South Piedmont Conference regular season championship. Richardson is active outside of athletics participating in the UNC Charlotte Geographic Information Systems Mapping Program, and the UNC Chapel Hill Uplift Plus Program. He also created an Online Platform to encourage AP and advanced course enrollment among students of color https://www.blackboldandbrilliant.com/. Richardson is interested in studying Computer and Information Science in college and has been accepted to UNC Charlotte, NC A&T University, UNC Pembroke, NC Central University, and UNC Greensboro.
Kendall Underberg – Chapel Hill High School – Chapel Hill, NC
Kendall Underberg, a senior at Chapel Hill High School, was a member of the soccer team whose senior season culminated with a 3A Men’s State Championship. Outside of athletics, Underberg volunteered with Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity. He plans on studying Civil Engineering and has been accept to the University of New Haven, East Carolina University, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Amaya Williams – Cox Mill High School – Concord, NC
Amaya Williams, a senior at Cox Mill High School, twice qualified for the NCHSAA State Championships as a swimmer, while also participating on the volleyball team. Williams is also a member of the Beta Club and the National Art Honor Society. She has volunteered her time to several organizations including the Ronald McDonald House and the Red Cross. She will look to study Psychology as she furthers her education.
Login Williams – William A. Hough High School – Cornelius, NC
Login Williams a senior at W.A. Hough High School is a member of the volleyball team and was named the 2018 4A I-Meck Conference Player of the Year. As an honor roll student, Williams has maintained a 3.5 unweighted GPA and will further her education at Radford University studying Business Education.
Kayla Womack – Cleveland High School – Clayton, NC
Kayla Womack is a senior at Cleveland High School who is a four-year member of the Varsity Softball Team. As a multiple All-Conference selection, Womack helped her team to an appearance in the 3A State Softball Championship her junior season. She is an active member of her church and an FFA Member. After graduation, Womack will attend Virginia Wesleyan University where she will study Psychology.
