WADESBORO—Veteran high school and college football coach Ed Emory passed away on Friday at his home at the age of 75.
Among his stops as a successful high school coach were Brevard, Anson and Richmond Senior. He coached collegiately at Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Clemson and East Carolina, leading the ECU Pirates program from 1980 through ’84. From 2001 to ’06, he was the head coach at Richmond Senior High School, during which time the Raiders compiled a record of 77-7 and made three regional championship games.
He also had a stint in professional football, serving as the offensive coordinator for the Memphis Showboats in the United States Football League.
Emory was born in Lancaster, S.C., graduated from Camden Military Academy and then earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at East Carolina. He is a member of the East Carolina University Hall of Fame.
Outside of football, Emory had served on the Wadesboro Town Council and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wadesboro.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Wadesboro. There will also be a memorial service at a later date in Greenville. The family will greet friends on Tuesday from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Leavitt Funeral Home.
