GREENSBORO— Several former high school athletic standouts and a couple of great high school coaches have been named to the newest class of the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame was created in 2005 and will have 88 members after this class, the eighth in the history of the program, is inducted. The inductions are scheduled for September 17.
Among the inductees are former NFL players Torry Holt (Eastern Guilford, N.C. State) and Dino Hackett (Southern Guilford, Appalachian State).
Two legendary soccer coaches to be honored include Herk DeGraw, who coached at Greensboro Grimsley, and Zack Osborne, who directed the Greensboro Page programs. Both are among the winningest coaches in soccer in NCHSAA history. The other coach to be recognized is Woody Gibson, who served as athletic director at High Point University and also coached soccer and golf there.
Other former athletes include professional golfer John Inman (Greensboro Grimsley, University of North Carolina), basketball player Wayne Robinson (Greensboro Day, Virginia Tech, NBA) and tennis player Julia Ann Holt.
Marty Sheets, a graduate of Greensboro Smith High School, will be recognized in special education for outstanding involvement in the Special Olympics.
The late Rich Brenner, long time sports anchor at WGHP-TV in High Point, will be recognized as a member of the Legends Class for posthumous recognition.
