NCHSAA Dual Team Tennis : Elkin, Shelby, Cardinal Gibbons, Millbrook Win

CLASS 4-A: RALEIGH MILLBROOK 5, WINSTON-SALEM R.J. REYNOLDS 4

        GREENSBORO—Raleigh Millbrook stopped the Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds bid for a fourth consecutive North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s dual team tennis championship on Saturday with a hard-fought 5-4 decision.

The match began Saturday morning at the Burlington Tennis Center on outdoor courts and five of six singles were completed before the rain came. The finals then moved indoors to the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

The number-two doubles was the final match completed and proved to be the margin of victory as Logan Weber and Austin Cobb of Millbrook beat Nick McDaniel and John Kretzschmar 10-3 to clinch the state title.

The teams split the six singles matches, with three of them going to the tiebreaker after split sets.

Millbrook was making its fourth trip to the championship but first since 2009 when it beat R.J. Reynolds in the final. Millbrook finished the season 19-3 while Reynolds wound up 20-5 in dual matches.

DURHAM—Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons had little trouble in rolling to its third consecutive North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s dual team tennis championship Saturday afternoon, blanking Charlotte Catholic 5-0 at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on the campus of Duke University.

       The match had originally been scheduled for the Burlington Tennis Center outdoors but was moved due to rain.

       Gibbons won the five completed singles matches in straight sets, led by Robert Kelly and Matt Galush and the number-one and number-two singles.  Both completed their seasons unbeaten in singles play, and Kelly won the NCHSAA 3-A singles crown last weekend.

       The victorious Crusaders won their seventh dual team title in two different classifications and finished the season with a perfect 26-0 mark. Charlotte Catholic wound up 14-3.

  GREENSBORO—Shelby’s Golden Lions completed a perfect 21-0 season en route to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men’s dual team tennis championship on Saturday, beating Carrboro 5-3 in action at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

The match had originally been scheduled for the Burlington Tennis Center outdoors but was moved due to rain.

Shelby, the defending champ, won four of the six singles and then took first and third doubles to earn the championship. Marshall Parker, who won the state singles championship last weekend, won at the number-one singles and teamed with Miles Poage to take the number-one doubles. It was Shelby’s fifth NCHSAA men’s dual team tennis title in five appearances in the championship.

Carrboro, which got singles wins from Jacob Zinn and Paul Flournoy in the fifth and sixth positions and then saw those two team to win the third doubles, ended the season with a 20-2 record.

       SINGLES: Tyler Macy (E) def. Gin Kang 6-0, 6-0; Ryan Schell (E) def. Danny Oh 6-1, 6-1; David Mullin (E) def. Josh Mu 6-4, 6-4; Eric Wang (NCSSM) def. Ashton Gant 7-5, 6-3; Chad Vestal (E) def. Abhay Qureshi 7-6 (7), 6-3; Jacob Lyon (E) def. Russell Aryeetey 6-4, 7-6(4).
