NCHSAA 2-A, 4-A Track Championships Return To A&t

GREENSBORO—Top athletes from across the state of North Carolina will compete in another busy weekend of track as the North Carolina High School Athletic Association completes its state track and field championships.

The final weekend of competition will feature 2-A championships for both men and women on Friday, and then on Saturday the 4-A championships will be held, all at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

The 1-A and 3-A meets were held last weekend.

Action in the field events will begin at noon and running events will start at 1 p.m. on Friday, while Saturday’s schedule opens with field events at 10 am and running events at 11 am. It will be the 87th annual men’s championships and the 36th annual renewal of the women’s event.

Burlington Cummings is the defending state 2-A women’s champion while North Brunswick won the team title among 2-A men last year. Regional team champions among the women’s teams this spring include Swansboro, Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons, Salisbury and West Henderson. The West Henderson men also won their West Regional, while perennial state track power North Rowan, Farmville Central and North Brunswick took men’s regional titles.

Southeast Raleigh, led by 2007 NCHSAA Athlete of the Year Gabby Mayo, will seek to defend its 4-A women’s crown. Mayo has been the Most Valuable Performer in each of the last two women’s 4-A championships and Southeast Raleigh won the 2007 4-A East Regional. Durham Jordan, Charlotte Vance and Charlotte Harding University also won their respective regionals in women’s competition.

New Bern is the defending men’s champ and earned the 4-A Mid-East Regional crown last weekend. Southern Pines Pinecrest, Charlotte Vance and Matthews David Butler were the other schools to earn men’s regional team titles.

The Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Greensboro Sports Commission, North Carolina Amateur Sports and Pepsi-Cola are serving as corporate sponsors for the event.
