MOUNT AIRY—The Mount Airy High School football program has been a consistently strong one over the years, and the Granite Bears have been adding to a record for the last several seasons.
Following Mount Airy’s game last Friday night against East Surry, the Granite Bears have now scored in 223 consecutive games, which is a North Carolina High School Athletic Association state record.
The last time Mount Airy was shut out was in the fourth round of the NCHSAA playoffs in 1996, when Murphy beat Mount Airy 19-0 as Mount Airy finished an 11-4 campaign.
That was in the first year of head coach Eddie Cobbs’ tenure, which lasted three years. Kelly Holder has been the head coach at Mount Airy ever since and 199 of these games have occurred with him at the helm.
Our thanks to Mount Airy High School, athletic director Donald Price, coach Holder and Mount Airy football historian Doug McDaniel for thorough documentation of this unusual achievement.
