MONROE—An outstanding coach at Monroe High School recently hit a career coaching victory milestone.
Johnny Sowell, who is both the head football and head basketball coach at Monroe, recently earned his 400th career coaching victory in basketball, according to The Charlotte Observer.
Sowell started coaching Monroe’s boys team in 1993. His Redhawks beat Union Academy 64-26 at home to give Sowell an impressive career record of 400-163.
Sowell won an NCHSAA state championship in 1980 as a player at Monroe and 30 years later earned one as the coach of a state championship team.
