CHAPEL HILL—James Smith of Mallard Creek and McKenzie White of South Brunswick have been named winners of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel with Subway® Restaurants.
Each week one male and one female athlete in NCHSAA competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Smith, junior quarterback for the outstanding Mallard Creek football team, accounted for over 400 yards total offense as Mallard Creek held off Lake Norman 48-41 in the 4-AA Western regional football championship game to advance to the state final. Smith threw 280 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 129 yards and a score to lead the Mavericks to victory. Smith was eight for eight through the air for 241 yards in the first half alone.
White had a terrific week for the South Brunswick women’s swimming team. In two swim meets, White had three individual victories and one runner-up finish and also swam legs on four victorious relay teams. She won both the 50 free and the 100 fly individual events during the week and swam legs on 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay teams at different times.
TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during their Tuesday night SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients are also recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
