COACH JOE POPP DIES AT AGE OF 82
MOORESVILLE– Long time football coach Joe Popp died here on Thursday at the age of 82.
The funeral is scheduled for eleven o’clock Tuesday morning at Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Mooresville.
Popp was born in Johnstown, PA., and coached collegiately at such places as North Carolina, George Washington, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech. In the 1970’s he coached in the old World Football League and later was on the Cleveland Browns staff.
Popp coached at the high school level at Jonesville, then in Winston-Salem at Southwest High, and then at Mooresville. Mooresville won the Western North Carolina High School Activities Association football title in 1961.
Popp was a graduate of Catawba College. He is a member of the Catawba College Hall of Fame, the Cambrian County (PA) Sports Hall of Fame and the Mooresville Hall of Fame.
The Mooresville High School stadium bears his name.
