Greensboro Games: Weiker Leads South Stanly To Victory In 1-A Baseball Opener; Weddington Rolls Past Conley In 3-A

NCHSAA 1-A BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP—GAME ONE

WEIKER LEADS SOUTH STANLY TO 3-0 WIN OVER MIDWAY IN NCHSAA 1-A BASEBALL

GREENSBORO – Russ Weiker helped lead South Stanly with both his arm and his bat to a 3-0 victory over Midway on Friday in the opening game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A baseball championship series at NewBridge Bank Park.

Weiker, who was the Most Valuable Player of last year’s NCHSAA state 1-A championship series as the Rebel Bulls beat Durham Voyager Academy, limited the Raiders to just one hit while striking out eight and walking just one in improving his pitching mark to 12-1.  He was also two for four at the plate and drove in two of the three South runs.

South Stanly got an unearned run in the third and then parlayed two Midway errors around a pair of hits, singles by Trey Mabry and an RBI-single by Weiker, for a pair of runs in the fifth.

Taylor Calcutt  (10-2) went the distance on the mound for Midway, striking out six and not walking a batter. Midway’s only hit was a single up the middle by designated hitter Tyler Pope as Weiker faced only 25 batters in the game that lasted 1 hour and 31 minutes.

South Stanly is in the finals for the fourth in the last five years and is the defending state champion. Midway is in the championship series for the first time since 1981 and had a 10-game winning streak snapped.

South Stanly is now 29-5 overall while Midway slipped to 26-4.

Game two of the best-of-three is set for Saturday morning at 11 o’clock. This is the 97th year for baseball championships in the NCHSAA.

COLLINS HAS FIVE RBI TO LEAD WEDDINGTON TO VICTORY IN 3-A GAME ONE

GREENSBORO – Sean Collins had five runs batted in to lead Weddington to a convincing 12-5 victory over D.H Conley on Friday night in the first game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A baseball championship series at NewBridge Bank Park.

Collins got the Bulldogs off to a fast start with a three-run homer in the first in a game that saw Weddington bang out 14 hits and take advantage of eight walks issued by Conley pitching. He also had a pair of sacrifice flies.

Chris Simpson was a perfect three for three at the plate, including a triple, with three RBI and three runs scored, while Alex Bostic and Daniel Calabretta had two hits apiece for Weddington.

Weddington rolled up an 8-2 lead before the Vikings cut into the advantage with three in the fifth, scoring three times only one hit, a couple of walks and an error.

But then the Bulldogs put it away with three in the fifth, with Simpson getting an RBI single, Jeremy Schellhorn driving one in on a fielder’s choice and then a run scoring on an error.

Thompson Brown and Aaron Martin had two hits apiece for Conley.

Collins was actually the starting pitcher for Weddington but came out after three innings. Josh Islam, who pitched three innings in relief, got the win while Michael Fuller was the losing pitcher.

Weddington is now 23-10 overall while Conley dropped to 27-4.
