Chris Hobbs, who was a standout basketball player at East Chapel Hill High School and then played collegiately at Clemson, has died at the age of 33, according to a variety of media reports.
No details have been released as to the cause of death.
Hobbs was a freshman on the East Chapel Hill team that won the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s basketball championship in 1997. It was the first year that East Chapel Hill had opened and there were no seniors at the school.
Andy Jones hit a long three-pointer in the waning seconds to lift the Wildcats to the victory over Hickory.
Hobbs later played professionally overseas after playing at Clemson from 2000 to ’04. He made the all-rookie team for the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2001 and played in 116 games in his career for the Tigers.
