FAIRMONT— Fairmont High School head football coach James Atkinson has resigned, according to multiple media reports.

Atkinson’s Golden Tornadoes posted a 4-7 record in his only year as head coach at the school.

Atkinson had previously served as an assistant football coach at Lexington and at A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis.

Fairmont was ineligible to participate in the NCHSAA football playoffs this year due to four ejections for fighting in a regular-season game against Lake View (SC).
