CHAPEL HILL— Samuel Wyrick of East Rowan and Kenny Sevilla of Wallace-Rose Hill have been named winners of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel with Subway® Restaurants.
Each week one male and one female athlete in NCHSAA competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators. With no women’s sports currently going on last week until the beginning of the winter seasons, including basketball, two male athletes are being recognized this week.
Wyrick, senior quarterback for East Rowan, helped to engineer a huge upset as his 15th-seeded Mustangs nipped second-seeded Morganton Freedom 50-49 on the road in the opening round of the NCHSAA state 3-A football playoffs. Wyrick completed 23 of 32 passes for 355 yards and five touchdowns, ran for two additional scores and then threw a two-point conversion pass with 36 seconds left to play that lifted East Rowan to victory.
Interestingly enough, Samuel’s twin brother Seth had 250 yards in receptions, four of which went for touchdowns and caught the winning two-point conversion.
Sevilla, a sophomore midfielder on the soccer team at Wallace-Rose Hill, was the Most Valuable Player in the NCHSAA state 1-A men’s soccer championship game at Dail Soccer Field at N.C. State. Sevilla scored two goals as he led the Bulldogs to their second consecutive state title, lifting Wallace-Rose Hill to a 3-1 victory over East Surry.
TWC Sports Channel typically announces the winners of the awards during their Tuesday night SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients are be recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
