On this day in history in the NCHSAA, two teams from the same city—Gastonia–competed for a state title. Future NBA standout “Sleepy” Floyd led Hunter Huss over future Tar Heel and NBA star James Worthy and Ashbrook 60-59 for the 4-A men’s basketball crown. Ashbrook had beaten its Gastonia rival four times over the course of the season before losing in the title game.
