CHAPEL HILL— Amanda Gerni of Currituck and Richard “Peanut” Tolston of Fayetteville Jack Britt have been named winners of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel with Subway® Restaurants.
Each week one male and one female athlete in NCHSAA competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Gerni, a senior guard on the Currituck women’s basketball team, had back-to-back 28-point games in two big wins for the Knights last week, matching her career high twice.
She led Currituck, now 14-3 overall, to victories over Northeastern Coastal rivals Hertford County and Elizabeth City Northeastern. She is averaging 19.8 points per game and is shooting a sizzling 58 percent from the field.
Tolston, one of the state’s top wrestlers, won the 126-pound weight class in the 15th annual Boneyard Bash wrestling tournament in Fayetteville. The Boneyard Bash regularly attracts some of the state’s top wrestling programs, and this year featured Cary, Davie, New Bern along with nearly all the Cumberland County schools, with over 20 schools competing.
Tolston was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the lower weights in the tournament and has a 25-1 record on the season. The two-time state champion had a bye in the tournament’s first round and then won his other four matches in 1:43 of elapsed time or less, including winning two in just 14 seconds and in 43 seconds.
TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during their Tuesday night SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients are also recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
