HENDERSONVILLE’S FUQUA ADVANCES TO SINGLES FINALS;ELKIN TEAM TO FACE BISHOP MCGUINNESS PAIR IN DOUBLES
CARY—Jacob Fuqua of Hendersonville earned his way into the singles finals with two wins on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A men’s tennis championships at the Cary Tennis Center.
Fuqua, who last year lost in the finals in straight sets to Tyler Macy of Elkin, will take on Rosewood’s Dylan Cuddington in the championship. Cuddington won a terrific three-set match of John Latimer of Misenheimer Gray Stone Day in the afternoon semifinals, winning 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
Macy, the singles winner a year ago, is teaming this time with Ryan Schell of Elkin in doubles and the Buckin’ Elks duo advanced to the championship match with a pair of convincing wins, losing only one game in four sets. The Elkin team will play Kevin Weckworth and Sam McLaughry of Kernersville Bishop McGuinness in the championship match.
The Bishop duo dropped the first set of their semifinal with another Elkin team, David Bullin and Chad Vestal, but rallied to win 2-6, 7-5, 6-0. Weckworth has been a part of the last two doubles championship teams at 1-A, teaming with a different partner each year.
Finals are scheduled for 8:30 Saturday morning.

YOUNG PLAYERS FROM CARRBORO, SHELBY TO MEET FOR 2-A SINGLES CROWN
CARY— Two young players will square off for the singles championship after a grueling day of action Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men’s tennis championships at the Cary Tennis Center.
With the threat of inclement weather on Saturday, three rounds were played on the opening day of the championships, and after the long day freshman Brian Freiburghouse of Carrboro and sophomore Marshall Parker of Shelby were the only singles players to have won three matches apiece.
Parker went through fairly easily, losing only three games in his six sets. Freiburghouse survived a tough three-set match in the quarterfinals, rallying in the third set to beat Garrett Lakey of Wilkes Central 7-6(2) 5-7, 6-2, and then won the final match of the evening by 6-3, 6-4 over Zac Marion of Hillsborough Cedar Ridge in the semifinals.
A Newton-Conover team will attempt to win the 2-A doubles championship for the fourth year in a row. John Tate and Tyler Barrymore of the Red Devils will take on Bobby Decker and Eli Hile of Black Mountain Charles D. Owen for the title. Decker and Hile had one of the toughest matches in the doubles draw, outlasting Ray Webb Parker and Will Lutz of Shelby in three sets, with both of the sets they won by tiebreakers.
Tate teamed with Ryan Lampe to win the doubles championship last year.
Action is slated to start at 8:30 Saturday morning.

WAKE COUNTY ATHLETES COME UP BIG IN NCHSAA 4-A TENNIS
RALEIGH – Wake County schools played a prominent role in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s tennis championships on Friday at the Millbrook Exchange Park.
Three of the four entries in Saturday’s championship matches are from Wake County, and two more Wake County participants lost in the semifinals. The tournament played three rounds on Friday with the threat of inclement weather on Saturday.
The singles championship is an all-Wake County final as Bo Boyden of Raleigh Wakefield takes on Nick Stachowiak of Apex Middle Creek. Stachowiak won all three of his matches in straight sets and lost only five games in six sets, while Boyden had a pair of straight-set wins and then advanced to the final after Grey Hamilton of Southern Pines Pinecrest defaulted due to injury.
The Raleigh Millbrook pair of Chris Mahan and John Karlawish will face the Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds team of Jack Riazzi and Paul Yamane in the finals. Riazzi and Yamane made it to the 2011 4-A doubles finals but lost to a Millbrook team in that one. Yamane and Chad Hoskins of R.J. Reynolds teamed a year ago to win the doubles crown.
Championships are scheduled for 8:30 on Saturday morning,
