Celebrating 100 Years: This Day In NCHSAA History

March 25, 1989

On this day in history in the NCHSAA, future ACC stars Danyel Parker and Tonya Sampson teamed up to lead Clinton passed Bunker Hill 72-63 in the 2-A women’s basketball championship. Parker dropped 34 and Sampson added 25 as Clinton finished 26-0 on the season and won their first of back-to-back NCHSAA women’s basketball championships.

On this day in history in the NCHSAA, legendary and innovative football coach Gus Purcell passed away at the age of 87. Purcell is a member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame and made his mark as the head coach at Myers Park for many years. He grew up in Laurinburg.
