On this day in history in the NCHSAA, Clement’s E.V. Spell struck out an NCHSAA record 14 batters in a 14 inning, 1-0 victory over Garland. Garland’s pitcher, Larry Smith, recorded 27 strikeouts of his own in the loss.

On this day in history in the NCHSAA, Clifeteana McKiver of East Duplin and Julius Peppers of Southern Nash received the Pat Best Memorial Awards as the NCHSAA Athletes of the Year for the 1997-98 academic year. McKiver participated in volleyball, basketball and track. She was her team’s Most Valuable Player in volleyball but achieved most of her acclaim by being a state champion in the other two sports. Peppers was a three-sport star in football, basketball and track. He earned Parade All-American honors in football and in basketball scored over 1,600 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists during his prep career.
