One of the well-known schools which was a member of the old North Carolina High School Athletic Conference was Stephens-Lee High School of Asheville. Stephens-Lee opened in 1921 and graduated its first class in 1924. The school was also known for its excellent music program as well as athletics. One of the great coaches for the Stephens-Lee Bears was Clarence Moore, who later was inducted into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.
Bill Carver made significant contributions to high school athletics as a coach, administrator and game official. A graduate of Fayetteville’s E.E. Smith High School and Hampton University, Carver spent 37 years of his career in Cumberland County, first as a successful coach in several sports at his high school alma mater. He coached at E.E. Smith in various capacities for 18 years before moving into administration, first for 10 years as assistant principal and athletic director at Smith and then as director of student activities for the county.
Russ Blunt’s coaching career included four sports and an amazing six decades, but this 1936 graduate of St. Augustine’s College really made his mark in track. He built a dynasty at Hillside High School in Durham, winning 10 state championships in the old North Carolina High School Athletic Conference (NCHSAC) and then winning or sharing several state titles in NCHSAA competition in indoor and outdoor track. During one 12-year period his high school track teams lost only two dual meets and at one point he was acknowledged by USA Today as the oldest active high school coach in the country.

Donald Davis, Sr. from Burlington has a long track record of dedicated service to Cummings High School’s track team. Davis has served the City of Burlington as Superintendent of Sanitation from 1980 until 2006 when he retired. From 1987 until 2003 when he was named the Cummings Head Track and Field Coach, Davis volunteered as Assistant Track and Field Coach for both the indoor and outdoor teams. He has been a part of 27 team State Championships, spanning from 1987 to the 1A/2A Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championship his Cavaliers won this past weekend. His teams finished as state runners-up 12 times, he coached over 140 Individual Event State Champions and 31 State Meet MVP’s. Remarkably, he coached at least 1 state champion in the hurdles events for 24 consecutive years.
